Cathy Idema, BS, MPH, CHC

President and CEO
Health Systems Management Network

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing; University of Michigan
Master’s in Public Health; University of Michigan
Experience: As president of Health Systems Management Network, Inc. (HSMN), Ms. Idema directs a health care management consulting practice which has as its focus the support of the hospital’s revenue stream through operational assessments of the documentation process, coding, charge systems and the utilization of hospital resources. She has led operations assessments and redesign engagements in Admitting/Registration, Medical Records, Patient Accounts, Case Management, Quality Improvement and Information Systems in large academic medical centers. The common theme in many of these projects has been the improvement in the collection, documentation, coding and billing of clinical data to support patient care and the revenue stream. In addition, Ms. Idema has led a number of projects at large academic medical centers (such as Massachusetts General, Columbia Presbyterian, Hospital for Special Surgery, Beth Israel, Boston Medical Center, and University of Chicago) in which the engagement, education and support of the Medical staff around documentation of care were critical deliverables.

Ms. Idema has experience and knowledge of a variety of payer regulations and reimbursement methodologies and their relationship to quality clinical and demographic data. As a result of her operations management experience, she brings to engagements a deep understanding of the points of disconnect in the collection and flow of data critical to the revenue stream.

Most recently, Ms. Idema has led a number of projects assisting hospitals to prepare for outpatient prospective payment system (APGs or APCs). Success under outpatient PPS requires significant improvement in the collection, management, coding and reporting of clinical and demographic data. Design and management of patient flows, particularly as it relates to the determination and collection of co-pay are critical. Also, Ms. Idema has designed workflows and tools that bring together the billing of the ProFee with the technical fee processes that are currently under scrutiny by the OIG.

Experience (other):

Prior to her consulting career, Ms. Idema began her clinical and management experience at the University of Michigan Medical Center, followed by a post as the Director of Emergency Services and Ambulatory Care at a large municipal facility in New York City and then the same position at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, which included responsibility for the Ambulatory Network Corporation. As a part of these management roles, Ms. Idema designed new registration and coding practices for technical and professional fee billing. In addition, Ms. Idema developed and implemented performance indicators for managing the quality of staff performance.

Ms. Idema is on the faculty at the Columbia University School of Public Health and has published both clinical and public health articles and books. Ms. Idema has recently been a featured speaker at a number of national seminars and at regional HFMA meetings.
